Some of My Favorite Flowers Never Go to Weddings

Not every flower belongs in a wedding. Some stems are too short, some bloom at exactly the wrong time and sometimes there are just too many. Flower Friday began with the belief that every flower deserves the chance to brighten someone’s day. It may sound corny, but after spending months talking to my flower babies, I just can’t compost the extra blooms.

Friday Night at the Farm

Every Flower Friday begins the same way. As the week comes to an end, flowers that are at their peak but don’t have a wedding waiting for them fill special buckets. Before long familiar faces start to arrive and the farm shifts from growing flowers to sharing them. 

Soon the tables are overflowing with flowers as we begin making bouquets. We laugh a lot, eat a lot of cheese and yes, we drink a little wine. There is always someone trying to convince someone else that their bouquet is the prettiest. Everyone arranges flowers a little differently and that is part of the beauty. After a lot of cheese and wine it becomes surprisingly difficult to remember who made what bouquet. By the end of the night the tables are covered with bouquets waiting for their next destination. 

On Monday morning the bouquets begin making their way to local hospice patients. For many people, these may be the last fresh flowers they receive.

Why Hospice?

Why did we choose hospice? The answer is simple. Flowers have a quiet way of reminding us that beauty still exists. They don’t change the circumstances and they certainly don’t make grief disappear but they do brighten a room. They remind someone that another person cared enough to grow something beautiful just for them. Maybe that’s enough.

A Community Tradition

Flower Friday belongs to the people who quietly show up whenever the farm has enough flowers to share. These are friends who happily spend their Friday night after a long work week arranging bouquets. And my husband who always ends up being the van packer and delivery guy.

It has become my favorite tradition because it reminds me that flowers have always been about more than weddings. They are about people.

Why We Keep Doing It

Growing flowers has taught me that beauty is meant to be shared. Every bouquet we sell helps us create a bouquet to give away.
