The Highlands Estate in Cloverdale: One of the Most Thoughtfully Designed Wedding Venues I've Visited

As I drove through the massive iron gates and up the winding road to The Highlands Estate in Cloverdale, I found myself slowing down just to take it all in. Rolling hills dotted with old growth oaks stretched in every direction. Syrah vineyards followed the contours of the land. Perched high above the valley on 21 acres of countryside, The Highlands Estate feels tucked into its own peaceful world.

And then there is the barn.

Built by venue owners Gard and Whitney, the barn was designed to feel as though it has always belonged there. It has all the warmth and character of an old structure, yet every detail feels fresh, intentional, and thoughtfully executed. Inside, wagon wheel chandeliers glow overhead while fairy lights create an atmosphere that feels equal parts elegant and inviting. By the end of the evening, it transforms into the most enchanting place to celebrate.

A Ceremony Site That Lets the Landscape Shine

My favorite part of Highlands Estate is undoubtedly the ceremony site.

A large wooden arbor frames sweeping views of the valley and rolling oak-covered hills beyond. As a florist, there are times when I believe flowers should take center stage, and there are times when they should quietly support the beauty that already exists. This is one of those places where the landscape deserves to be part of the story.

Cassidy and Alex chose to keep the arbor décor simple with airy white chiffon draping and floral accents placed thoughtfully on either side. The result felt effortless and elegant. Rather than competing with the view, the flowers enhanced it.

One of my favorite design details was the use of small floral meadows to mark the reserved seating rows. There is something magical about fresh local flowers that feel connected to the land around them. If I had my way, I might have added little floral meadows to every row. Maybe next time.

As a farmer florist, I love venues where the landscape is already doing some of the work. The best floral designs feel connected to the setting rather than competing with it. You can learn more about my approach to seasonal wedding flowers here.

Dining Beneath the Open Sky

When the weather cooperates, dinner takes place outdoors in a beautiful courtyard strung with more fairy lights.

The handcrafted redwood farm tables, built by Gard himself, create a welcoming atmosphere that feels both elevated and relaxed. Long tables encourage conversation and connection, while candles, soft sage runners, and seasonal flowers add warmth and texture without overwhelming the setting.

One of the things I loved most about Highlands Estate is that so much of its beauty comes from thoughtful craftsmanship. You can feel the care that went into creating the experience.

A Venue Designed for a Wedding Weekend

For couples hoping to create more than a single day celebration, The Highlands Estate offers lodging for up to 22 guests on site.

The ability to gather your closest family and friends for an entire weekend changes the experience. Instead of rushing through a wedding day, couples can slow down, spend meaningful time together, and enjoy the property long before the ceremony begins and long after the last dance ends.

At 1,400 feet above the valley floor, surrounded by vineyards and open countryside, it feels wonderfully removed from the pace of everyday life.

The People Behind the Experience

Beautiful venues matter, but great wedding experiences are created by great people.

It was a pleasure working alongside planner Jaime of Jaime Tosti Events and venue owners Whitney and Gard. The three of them operated like a well-tuned team, handling details effortlessly and adapting when needed. Their shared commitment to hospitality and execution was evident throughout the day.

When talented vendors work together, couples get to relax and enjoy their wedding. That was certainly the case here.

Why The Highlands Estate Works So Well

Some venues are beautiful but challenging to navigate. Others are practical but lack character. The Highlands Estate manages to be both.

Guests move naturally from the ceremony site to cocktail hour, then to dinner beneath the lights, and finally into the barn for dancing and celebration. There are inviting spaces throughout the property, including a covered outdoor bar where guests can linger and visit while others enjoy the music.

The best wedding venues do more than provide a backdrop. They create a feeling that stays with people long after the wedding is over.

The Highlands Estate is one of those places.
